01/07/14 – The rising tide of big boxes that is Northwest Portland real estate development has now reached Thurman Street.

Construction is underway on Footprint Investments' novel micro-apartment complex just east of 23rd Avenue. When completed later this year, the narrow four-story building will contain 53 tiny units, each occupying less than 200 square feet. That will bring affordable dorm-like rentals to a tight housing market, expanded opportunities for local retail, and — more controversially — increased parking pressure on nearby streets, since the project was approved by Portland authorities without any provision for off-street parking.
