A Tree Grows on Raleigh Street

03/10/21 – Today, under the supervision of Darlene Nguyen, Bartlett Tree Experts removed the dead maple tree near the Raleigh building entrance and replaced it with a tree donated by the City of Portland.

Portland will not issue permits for maples on public streets these days, so a reasonably compatible alternative had to be found. The result is an exotic species originally from Iran, a Persian Ironwood, Parrotia persica Vanessa. The "Vanessa" subspecies is a cultivar known for its comparatively narrow and upright posture.

We'll have to wait for a while to find out if its reputation for lively fall color is well-deserved.
